Popular TUKO.co.ke producer and host King’ori Wangechi has emotionally recounted how he narrowly escaped death after a speeding vehicle nearly rammed into him and his crew during a shoot in Kangemi, Nairobi.
In a chilling narration shared on social media, King’ori revealed the terrifying incident happened on Wednesday, May 20, 2025, shortly after he and his team completed an interview near Shell Kangemi outside Mountain View Mall.
According to the media personality, they had chosen the roadside location to record a Piece To Camera (PTC), believing the area was safe because it had a road reserve acting as a temporary parking space.
“We set up the camera and rolled for the introduction,” King’ori wrote.
After completing the first take, the team decided to reshoot because he had forgotten to mention his name on camera.
What happened next would leave them traumatised.
“The Vehicle Was Speeding Towards Us”
King’ori said as his director of photography counted down for the second take, he suddenly noticed something unusual.
Instead of focusing on filming, the cameraman appeared distracted and frozen.
Moments later, King’ori realised a speeding vehicle was hurtling directly toward them.
“I was doing mental calculations of a vehicle that was speeding towards us,” he recalled.
He attempted to warn the cameraman, but the vehicle narrowly missed him before heading straight toward King’ori himself.
“At approximately two meters away from me, I let out a loud shriek,” he said.
The journalist instinctively jumped out of the way as the vehicle missed him “by a whisker.”
Horror as Woman and Baby Are Flung Into the Air
The terrifying ordeal quickly turned tragic.
As King’ori regained balance, he heard a loud bang behind him.
When he turned around, he witnessed a horrifying scene.
“To my horror, I saw a lady and a baby up in the air,” he narrated.
According to King’ori, the woman and child had apparently been distracted and did not notice the speeding vehicle approaching them.
The vehicle only came to a stop after crashing into a parked pickup truck nearby.
The journalist said the woman sustained serious injuries, while fears remained high that the baby may not have survived the impact.
“It happened so fast,” he wrote.
Police Officers Responded Within Minutes
King’ori praised police officers who quickly arrived at the scene moments after the crash.
He said three armed officers immediately took control of the situation, arrested the elderly driver involved, and coordinated emergency response efforts.
According to him, the driver did not appear intoxicated or visibly sick, although he suspected the man may have fallen asleep while driving.
The officers later radioed for an ambulance from a nearby hospital as they began processing the scene.
“Do Not Take Any Day for Granted”
The shocking experience left King’ori, his cameraman Kevoh, and driver Samson Ireri deeply traumatised.
The crew reportedly returned to the office in silence and skipped their next assignment due to the emotional shock.
“The bang and images of the two in the air have refused to leave my mind,” he wrote.
As he reflected on surviving the near-fatal ordeal, King’ori urged Kenyans to value life and exercise caution on the roads.
“Friends, do not take any day for granted! Drive carefully, as well!” he said.
The emotional narration has since triggered reactions online, with many Kenyans expressing relief that the media crew survived while also sending prayers to the injured victims and their families.
