NYERI, Kenya- DCP Secretary-General designate and Nyandarua Senator John Methu has led party leaders back to ACK Witima Church in Othaya, months after violence disrupted a service attended by DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua.
The leaders returned to the church on Sunday as part of DCP activities in Nyeri County.
A programme shared ahead of the visit indicated that the party delegation would attend the service from 10am before proceeding with other engagements in the area.
The return comes nearly eight months after a group of armed men disrupted a Sunday service at the same church on January 25, 2026.
Gachagua and several opposition leaders were attending the service when violence erupted outside the church.
Tear gas was fired into the compound, forcing worshippers and political leaders to seek safety as confrontations intensified.
Footage from the incident showed smoke surrounding the church and vehicles parked within the compound.
Several vehicles were damaged during the confrontation, while congregants fled through nearby farms and bushes.
Gachagua later accused police officers of working with the group that attacked the gathering and demanded investigations and prosecutions.
Police were accused of firing tear gas during the confrontation, allegations that prompted opposition leaders to seek answers from Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja.
The violence attracted condemnation from political and religious leaders, who called for places of worship to be protected from political confrontations.
A week after the attack, opposition leaders returned to ACK Witima for what they described as a solidarity and post-trauma visit to church leaders and congregants.
Sunday’s service marks another return by DCP officials to the church, with Methu leading the delegation in Gachagua’s absence.
The DCP leader is currently outside the country.
The January attack remains under scrutiny, with Gachagua and his allies maintaining that those responsible have not been held to account.
DCP officials are expected to address supporters after the service as the party intensifies its political activities in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
