NAIROBI, Kenya — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda to record a statement as investigations intensify into the violent attack on the Linda Mwananchi convoy in Keumbu, Kisii County.
The summons follows Friday’s incident in which a convoy carrying opposition leaders was allegedly ambushed by a group of armed youth along the Kisii–Keroka Road, resulting in several vehicles being stoned and damaged.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the National Police Service (NPS) said the legislator had been directed to appear before the Kisii County DCI offices to assist investigators.
“The Hon. Zaheer Jhanda, MP for Nyaribari Chache, has this morning been summoned to appear before the Kisii County DCI office in connection with the ongoing investigations,” the NPS said.
Police did not disclose the specific allegations against the MP or indicate whether he is being treated as a suspect or a witness.
Arrests Rise to Seven
The summons came as detectives expanded the investigation, arresting four more suspects linked to the violence.
According to the NPS, the latest arrests bring the total number of suspects in custody to seven after three others were arrested on Saturday.
“The operation, led by the OCS Keumbu and DCI Kisii Central, has resulted in the successful arrest of four additional suspects, bringing the total number of arrests to seven,” the police said.
Investigators said they are pursuing further leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify any other individuals who may have participated.
Convoy Attacked During Political Tour
The violence occurred as leaders affiliated with the Linda Mwananchi movement travelled from Kisii Town to Keroka for a political rally.
Videos widely shared on social media showed a group of youths hurling stones at the convoy, with some appearing to carry crude weapons as they targeted the vehicles.
The incident disrupted the political tour and raised fresh concerns over violence during political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna Demands Swift Action
Following the attack, Linda Mwananchi leader and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said he had reported the incident to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and called for a speedy investigation.
Sifuna alleged that leaders from the Kisii region were behind the violence and urged police to ensure everyone responsible is brought to justice.
The National Police Service has appealed to members of the public with information to assist investigators by reporting to the nearest police station or using its emergency reporting channels.
Investigations remain ongoing, and police have not announced any charges against those arrested.
