NAIROBI, Kenya — Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) National Youth Leader Wanjiku Thiga has claimed she was abducted on Monday evening by unknown individuals in Nairobi’s Kamakis area, sparking fresh concerns over the safety of political figures amid ongoing tensions in the country.
Wanjiku, a vocal critic of the government and a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, made the alarming announcement in a brief social media post shortly after the alleged incident.
“I have been abducted at Kamakis,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter), without offering further details.
I have been abducted at Kamakis.
The circumstances surrounding her disappearance remain unclear. Neither the police nor any government agency has publicly confirmed her whereabouts or issued a statement on the matter.
Her disappearance comes at a time when the country is reeling from a wave of protests and a crackdown on dissent linked to the recent Gen Z-led demonstrations.
Several political activists and online influencers have reported threats, harassment, or arbitrary arrests in recent weeks.
Wanjiku Thiga has played a prominent role in mobilizing youth under the DCP banner and has recently intensified criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Her alignment with Gachagua — who has also accused the government of orchestrating political persecution — has drawn both praise and backlash online.
Human rights organizations have raised an alarm, warning that the growing trend of enforced disappearances threatens to roll back democratic freedoms.
