EMBU, Kenya — The Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP), linked to former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, has declared its support for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political movement, becoming the latest outfit to join a growing anti-Ruto coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
At its National Delegates Conference held in Embu on Monday, June 16, DEP—popularly known as the Bus—announced plans to align with opposition forces working to ensure President William Ruto serves only one term in office.
“We have decided to listen to the voices of ordinary citizens and act according to their shared aspirations,” said DEP National Chairman Lenny Kivuti, who led the delegates in endorsing the shift.
The party had earlier in 2025 stated that it was not in any formal coalition, including with Kenya Kwanza.
But later, it cited widespread public dissatisfaction with the government’s performance, especially over the rising cost of living, extrajudicial killings, and unfulfilled promises.
“We no longer wish to be associated with a government that has lost touch with the people,” said Kivuti.
‘We’re going where the people are’
Kivuti said DEP would work with like-minded leaders such as Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Fred Matiang’i, Martha Karua, and Justin Muturi “to liberate the country from the chains of oppression.”
However, he clarified that the party would not formally merge with any political outfit, saying it wished to maintain independence while supporting a broader people-driven movement.
“We don’t want to repeat past mistakes—we are going where the people are,” he said.
The party also promised to roll out grassroots mobilisation, especially in Embu County, and to actively involve Generation Z in political engagement, social programs, and policy shaping.
Eyes on 2027
DEP used the event to announce plans to field candidates for all elective positions in Embu in 2027, with similar ambitions across other counties.
The party also endorsed Muminji Ward MCA Newton Kariuki as its preferred candidate for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat.
Kariuki is set to vie under the Democratic Party (DP), which DEP termed a “friendly affiliate.”
“We will support him fully. DP is a friendly party, and we are united in this cause,” Kivuti said.
