Iran Executes Man Convicted Over Deadly Attack During 2022 Protests

Date:

IRAN – Iran has executed a man convicted of involvement in a deadly attack on security personnel during the nationwide protests that erupted in 2022, the country’s judiciary confirmed on Saturday.

According to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news outlet, Mehran Bahramian was part of a group that opened fire on a vehicle carrying security officers in the city of Semirom, Isfahan Province, on December 31, 2022. The ambush killed officer Mohsen Rezaei and left several others wounded.

Bahramian was charged with moharebeh — “waging war against God” — a capital offence under Iranian law. Authorities accused him of shooting at security forces and inciting attacks on government buildings and personnel.

His conviction and death sentence, issued by the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan, were upheld by the Supreme Court before being carried out in the early hours of Saturday, Mizan reported. Officials described him as a “thug.”

The execution is the latest linked to the wave of protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died in police custody after being arrested for allegedly violating Iran’s strict dress code for women.

Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, were killed during the unrest, while thousands of protesters were detained.

Since then, Iranian courts have tried and executed several people accused of violent acts during the demonstrations.

In June, authorities hanged Abbas Kurkuri, convicted of killing seven people in the protests.

Rights groups, including Amnesty International, have repeatedly condemned Iran’s use of capital punishment, warning that the country executes more people annually than any other nation except China.
