PRETORIA, South Africa — The Kenyan High Commission in Pretoria has issued a security advisory urging Kenyan nationals living in South Africa to remain vigilant following recent protests and isolated incidents affecting foreign nationals.
In a notice dated May 4, 2026, the mission warned that demonstrations in parts of South Africa could pose safety risks and advised Kenyans to exercise caution and avoid affected areas.
“The Kenya High Commission in Pretoria wishes to advise all Kenyan nationals residing in the Republic of South Africa to exercise caution and remain vigilant in light of recent demonstrations and isolated incidents reported in some parts… affecting foreign nationals,” the statement reads.
Avoid protest zones, carry identification
The advisory urges Kenyans to steer clear of areas where protests or demonstrations are taking place and to follow guidance issued by local authorities. It also emphasizes the importance of carrying valid identification and relevant documentation at all times.
Officials cautioned that rapidly evolving situations during protests can expose foreign nationals to heightened risks, including potential targeting or accidental harm.
Report incidents, seek assistance
In case of emergencies, Kenyans have been advised to report incidents to the South African Police Service and notify the High Commission in Pretoria for assistance.
“The High Commission remains available to provide support,” the advisory states, providing contact channels including telephone lines and an official email address.
Broader context
The latest advisory reflects growing concern among diplomatic missions about the safety of their nationals during episodes of unrest.
Under international consular norms, embassies and high commissions are mandated to safeguard the welfare of their citizens abroad, particularly during emergencies.
The notice underscores the vulnerability of diaspora communities during periods of instability and the need for heightened personal security awareness. It also signals the Kenyan government’s continued monitoring of the situation in South Africa.
While the High Commission did not indicate any immediate evacuation plans, the advisory serves as a precautionary measure aimed at minimizing risk and ensuring a quick response in case of incidents.
Kenyan authorities are expected to continue liaising with South African counterparts as the situation evolves.
