Kevin Kiarie Returns to Kenya After Double Gold Win to Silent JKIA Reception

Date:

Kenyan skater Kevin Kiarie returned to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on May 7, 2026, following a successful outing at the African Skating Championships in Cairo, Egypt, where he secured two gold medals.

Despite his continental achievement, his arrival was marked by the absence of any official reception or government delegation, sparking widespread public reaction and renewed debate over how Kenya recognises emerging sports talent.

Kiarie, who competed in the Freestyle Battle and Classic Slalom categories, returned home with impressive results that positioned him among the continent’s standout performers in skating.

However, his homecoming was notably low-key, with no officials from the Ministry of Sports, no federation representatives, and no formal ceremony to welcome him back.

Upon landing at JKIA, Kiarie was received only by his immediate family members. There were no banners, media coverage, or structured reception arrangements typically associated with international sporting success in Kenya.

The quiet nature of his return quickly gained attention on social media, especially given the scale of his achievement in Egypt. Many users expressed surprise that a double gold medallist at a continental championship would return without any official recognition at the airport.

In a brief personal message shared after his arrival, Kiarie expressed gratitude to those who stood by him throughout his journey.

“Special thanks to my family for standing with me through the journey and for receiving me at the airport today.”

Kiarie’s performance at the African Skating Championships in Cairo marked a significant milestone in his sporting career.

Competing against athletes from across the continent, he clinched gold in both Freestyle Battle and Classic Slalom events, showcasing technical skill, consistency, and competitive composure.

His success followed another strong showing earlier in April 2026 when he travelled to Benin for a self-funded competition. Despite limited resources, he returned from that event with a gold and silver medal, further highlighting his resilience and dedication to the sport.

The absence of an official reception for Kiarie triggered immediate discussion online, with many Kenyans questioning why an athlete of his calibre was not formally celebrated upon return.

A major point of debate has been the contrast between recognition given to athletes in mainstream sports such as athletics and football versus those in niche or emerging disciplines like skating.

Some social media users also highlighted reports that Kiarie had to rely on a matatu (public minibus) to get to the airport for his departure due to financial constraints, framing it as an example of the challenges faced by athletes in less-funded sports categories.

While there was no physical reception organized for Kiarie, President William Ruto issued a congratulatory message on social media acknowledging his achievement and praising his success at the continental level.

The Ministry has previously stated that support for “niche” sports is often limited due to structural challenges, including the absence of fully established national federations and formal funding applications.

This has been cited as one of the reasons why some athletes do not receive consistent institutional backing.
