Israel PM Condemns Attack on Catholic Symbol, Promises Action

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned the actions of a soldier from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) accused of damaging a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon, saying the incident is under criminal investigation.

In a statement, Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened” by the reported act, which has drawn concern among religious communities and observers in the region.

“I condemn the act in the strongest terms,” he said, adding that military authorities have launched a probe and would take “appropriately harsh disciplinary action” against the individual responsible.

The incident comes amid heightened sensitivities around religious sites in conflict-affected areas, where protection of cultural and religious heritage remains a key concern under international law.

Netanyahu emphasised Israel’s stated commitment to religious tolerance, describing the country as one where multiple faiths coexist and practice freely. He said Israel “cherishes and upholds” values of mutual respect among different religious communities.

However, his remarks also included broader claims about the status of Christian populations in the Middle East, contrasting Israel with neighbouring countries. Such assertions are often contested by analysts and rights groups, who point to complex demographic, political, and security dynamics across the region.

The Israeli leader expressed regret over the incident and any distress caused to Christians in Lebanon and globally, signalling an attempt to contain diplomatic and interfaith tensions.

The development highlights ongoing concerns over the conduct of armed forces in conflict zones, particularly regarding the protection of religious property and civilians.

Under international humanitarian law, including principles reflected in the Geneva Conventions, parties to a conflict are obligated to respect cultural and religious sites.

Observers say the outcome of the investigation and any disciplinary measures will be closely watched as a test of accountability within the Israeli military.
