NAIROBI, Kenya — Tahmeed Coach Ltd. has attributed the road crash that claimed six lives to a chain-reaction involving two trucks, saying preliminary findings indicate the collision occurred after one trailer was struck from behind while overtaking.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the bus company said initial information suggests that a truck attempting to overtake was hit from the rear by another truck, forcing it into the path of the oncoming Tahmeed bus.
“Preliminary information suggests an overtaking truck was struck from behind by a second truck, causing it to collide with our bus,” the company said.
Tahmeed said it would await the outcome of investigations by the relevant authorities before drawing final conclusions on the cause of the accident.
Six people killed
The company confirmed that six people died in the crash, including the driver of the Tahmeed bus and the driver of the trailer involved in the head-on collision.
It extended condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and said it was working closely with the affected families to provide the necessary support.
The company also outlined the assistance offered to survivors following the accident.
According to Tahmeed, several passengers sustained minor injuries and received immediate medical treatment before being discharged. The company dispatched a rescue bus to transport the passengers to Mombasa and enable them to continue their journey.
It added that five passengers who remained under medical observation were discharged on Tuesday morning before resuming their trip aboard the company’s 8 a.m. Nairobi–Mombasa service.
Investigations underway
Tahmeed reiterated that the safety and welfare of its passengers and employees remain a top priority.
Images from the scene showed extensive damage to the front sections of both the bus and the trailer, with several other vehicles also affected by the collision.
Authorities have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
