NAIROBI, Kenya — The ruling United Democratic Alliance has launched a sharp attack on former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of bitterness, political sabotage, and working behind the scenes to undermine President William Ruto.
In a 12-page open letter signed by UDA chairperson Cecily Mbarire and Secretary General Hassan Omar, the party claimed Kenyatta had failed to accept Ruto’s victory in the 2022 General Election.
UDA Accuses Uhuru of Political Sabotage
According to the ruling party, the former Head of State has remained fixated on the current administration and is allegedly mobilising resistance against the government.
“It is a fact that William Ruto won the 2022 election against your wishes and political schemes. For once, be a democrat. William Ruto is now the president of the Republic of Kenya. That is a reality you must live with and accept,” the letter stated in part.
UDA further accused Kenyatta of fuelling public anger and sponsoring dissent against the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“Since leaving office, you have dedicated yourself to undermining the very government you handed over. You operate from behind the scenes, mobilising political hostility, fueling public anger, and quietly hoping the country fails,” the letter added.

Economy and Governance at Centre of Dispute
The party also blamed the former administration for leaving behind what it termed a broken economy burdened by debt, inflation, and weakened public institutions.
According to UDA, President Ruto inherited a struggling economy that has taken significant effort to stabilise over the past three years.
“You handed over a collapsing economy, a suffocating public debt burden, broken institutions, demoralised sectors, and a country on the brink,” the letter continued.
The ruling party argued that sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture had deteriorated during Kenyatta’s tenure and claimed the current administration has made progress in reforming them.
The letter further stated that Kenyatta’s 10-year presidency recorded both achievements and what the party described as “monumental and gigantic failures.”
Jubilee Criticism Sparks Political Tensions
The remarks come days after the Jubilee Party leader criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration over the high cost of living and rising taxes.
Speaking during a Jubilee Party delegates meeting on May 25, Kenyatta accused the government of ignoring public concerns and resorting to divisive ethnic politics instead of addressing economic hardships facing Kenyans.
“It is not that we do not know where the problem is. We all know taxes are high and the cost of living has become unbearable, and that is why Kenyans are complaining,” Kenyatta said.
His remarks followed recent public protests over fuel prices and the rising cost of living, which have intensified political tensions between allies of the current and former administrations.
Growing Political Realignment
The latest exchange signals escalating political hostility between factions aligned to Kenyatta and those backing Ruto, nearly four years after the bitter fallout between the two leaders who once governed together under the Jubilee administration.
The renewed attacks also come as Kenya continues grappling with economic pressures, taxation concerns, and growing public scrutiny over governance and accountability.
