Ruto Announces KMTC Nyamira Expansion

Date:

NYAMIRA, Kenya — President William Ruto has announced a major infrastructure expansion at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nyamira Campus, aimed at strengthening the country’s health workforce.

The project will include the construction of hostels to accommodate 580 students, 20 new classrooms, and five laboratories to support training across various medical disciplines.

Speaking during the commissioning of an affordable housing project at the campus, Ruto said the investment is critical to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which depends on a well-trained and adequately staffed health workforce.

“Achieving UHC will not be possible without health professionals. We require more nurses, radiographers, and other health cadres,” he said.

The President emphasised that expanding training infrastructure is essential to improving the quality and capacity of health education in the country.

“To have the best skills, you need adequate classrooms, hostels, and laboratories. It is for this reason that we are investing in these resources,” he added.

As part of the broader plan, Ruto also committed to upgrading Nyamira County Referral Hospital to serve as a clinical training and placement centre for KMTC students.

The move is expected to enhance practical training opportunities while improving healthcare service delivery in the region.

The President was accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, and Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, among other officials.

KMTC leadership, including Board Chairperson Joseah Cheruiyot and CEO Kelly Oluoch, said the expansion will significantly boost training capacity and align with national health priorities.

The development comes as the government intensifies efforts to bridge gaps in healthcare staffing, with increased focus on training more professionals to meet growing demand.

The investment also complements ongoing initiatives in the housing sector, with the President reiterating the government’s commitment to delivering affordable housing projects across the country.
