Why These Blackouts Are Happening

Kenya Power says these outages are pre-planned maintenance operations meant to:

  • Strengthen aging infrastructure
  • Prevent future unplanned outages
  • Enhance the reliability of electricity supply

In a post on X, the company emphasized that scheduled blackouts help reduce long-term disruptions by allowing technicians to safely repair and upgrade power lines.

And while the idea of an outage might seem inconvenient, it’s all part of an effort to ensure the lights stay on more consistently in the future.

Unscheduled outages, on the other hand, still occur due to weather events, vandalism, or unexpected technical faults — issues Kenya Power says it handles as swiftly as possible.

What You Should Do Before the Outage

Before the power cuts hit, here’s how to stay ahead of the curve:

  • Charge your devices the night before — phones, laptops, power banks, the whole lot.
  • Unplug sensitive electronics like TVs and desktops to avoid damage from potential surges.
  • Prepare alternatives for cooking, lighting, and connectivity, especially if you’re working remotely or caring for children or the elderly.
  • Backup systems in schools, hospitals, and businesses should be on standby.

If you’re operating a business, especially in affected areas, consider planning around the outage to avoid losses.

While no one likes a blackout, at least this one comes with a heads-up. Use the opportunity to take a digital detox, finish that book, or finally reorganize your pantry — unless, of course, your backup generator has other plans.
