Body of Missing Activist Ibrahim Mwiti Found in Thika Mortuary, Family Demands Answers

Date:

THIKA, Kenya – The search for 24-year-old activist Mwiti came to a tragic end when his family identified his body at Thika Level Five Hospital mortuary, over a month after his mysterious disappearance in November 2024.

Mwiti, a delivery worker, was last seen in Nairobi’s city center, sparking a frantic search by his family and friends.

Social media campaigns and a missing person report filed at Kamukunji Police Station under OB number 80A/13/11/24 failed to locate him until January 2, 2025.

Authorities claimed Mwiti’s death was the result of a hit-and-run accident, but his friends and family remain skeptical.

“We were informed it was a hit-and-run, but we know nothing else. We need to know what happened to our son,” his mother, Sadhiya Iman, said.

Mwiti’s life had grown increasingly difficult after losing his ID card, which hindered access to essential services.

His disappearance and subsequent death have left his loved ones seeking clarity about the circumstances surrounding his demise.

His case adds to a rising number of disappearances in Kenya, which human rights groups link to a troubling trend of abductions and forced disappearances.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has documented at least 82 cases of abductions since June 2024, coinciding with public protests against the Finance Bill.

Thirteen of these incidents were reported in the last three months of 2024, with seven in December alone.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mulele Ingonga, has demanded swift action, instructing the police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to expedite investigations into the disappearances.

“Reports of abductions and forced disappearances are deeply concerning. The state has an obligation to protect life and security,” Ingonga said in a statement.

The DPP highlighted several unresolved cases, including those of Steve Mbisi, Billy Mwangi, and cartoonist Gideon Kibet, urging updates within three days.

Mwiti’s family now joins a growing list of Kenyans calling for accountability and transparency in investigating unexplained deaths.

The pain of their loss is compounded by lingering questions: Was Mwiti’s death truly accidental, or does it point to a larger, systemic issue?

For families like Mwiti’s, answers can’t come soon enough.
