NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya’s Raila Odinga has received a major endorsement in his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.
Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam announced his support following a conversation with Kenyan President William Ruto.
This move signals Mauritius’ withdrawal from the race, as their candidate Anil Gayan steps aside in favor of Odinga.
In a gesture of goodwill, Prime Minister Ramgoolam backed Odinga after a cordial phone conversation with President Ruto. Expressing gratitude, Ruto highlighted the deepening diplomatic ties between Kenya and Mauritius.
“I congratulated Prime Minister Ramgoolam on his election and for the faith his people have shown in him and his party,” Ruto said. “He confirmed his support for Raila Odinga’s bid, and for that, I expressed my utmost appreciation.”
Ruto’s endorsement of Odinga on August 27 was a highly publicized event, drawing attendance from key East African leaders, underscoring regional backing for Odinga’s campaign.
Odinga’s campaign is buoyed by an experienced team of political strategists and diplomats, including Makumi Mwagiru, Boaz Mbaya, and Catherine Mwangi.
Their expertise aims to secure support from diverse African blocs ahead of the February 2025 election.
However, the race is far from uncontested. Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Youssouf remains a formidable rival, alongside Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. Both candidates are expected to garner significant backing from their respective regions.
Odinga’s bid reflects a larger vision of unity and progress within the African Union. Mauritius’ endorsement marks a pivotal moment, signaling the potential for stronger collaboration among African nations.
As February approaches, Odinga’s campaign is poised to shape conversations on the AU’s future leadership. This growing support demonstrates the importance of strategic alliances in shaping Africa’s collective progress.
