NAIROBI, Kenya — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of 710 suspects nationwide following protests that turned violent across several regions.
In a statement issued on social media, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations warned members of the public against turning lawful demonstrations into criminal activity.
The agency said investigations into the unrest are ongoing, with many of those arrested already arraigned in court.
Arrests recorded across regions
The DCI provided a breakdown of arrests made during the protests:
- Nairobi — 189
- Rift Valley — 259
- Eastern — 103
- Central — 142
- Coast — 7
- Western — 10
This brings the total to 710 suspects arrested nationwide.
DCI warns against criminal conduct
The agency emphasised that while Kenyans have a constitutional right to peaceful assembly, any acts of violence or destruction of property will be treated as criminal offences.
It listed offences including looting, arson, road blockades, attacks on police officers, and damage to vehicles and infrastructure.
“No one is above the law,” the statement read.
Ongoing investigations
The DCI said investigations into incidents recorded during the demonstrations are still ongoing.
Authorities said individuals suspected of organising, financing, or inciting violence will also be pursued and prosecuted.
The agency urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain order.
Tension after nationwide protests
The arrests come in the wake of widespread demonstrations linked to rising fuel prices, which triggered transport disruptions and clashes with police in parts of the country.
Security agencies have since intensified operations to restore order and prevent further escalation.
The DCI said it remains committed to ensuring accountability while safeguarding constitutional rights to peaceful protest.
