Former University of Nairobi Chancellor Dies

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former University of Nairobi Chancellor Dr Vijoo Rattansi, the institution’s first female chancellor and a renowned philanthropist, has died.

Former University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama Gitahi confirmed her death on Thursday, paying tribute to her as a steadfast champion of higher education and a dedicated supporter of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Dr. Rattansi was a champion of higher education whose generosity, through numerous academic scholarships, opened doors for many,” Prof. Kiama said in a statement.

He also reflected on the personal support he received from the former chancellor during a challenging period in his tenure at the University of Nairobi.

“On a personal level, as I recounted in my autobiography, she stood resolutely by my side after the midnight message,” he said.

Prof. Kiama extended his condolences to her family, expressing hope that they would find strength and comfort during the mourning period.

“I extend my heartfelt prayers to her family, trusting that the God of all comfort will sustain them through this difficult period,” he added.

Dr Rattansi was widely recognised for her leadership of the Rattansi Educational Trust, which has for decades supported higher education by providing bursaries to financially disadvantaged Kenyan students.

Following the death of her husband, the late Hassanally Rattansi, she assumed the role of Chairperson of the Rattansi Educational Trust in 2003, overseeing its continued mission of expanding access to university education through scholarships funded by income from the Rattansi Educational Trust Building in Nairobi.

Beyond the trust, she held several leadership positions in educational and charitable organisations. She served as Chairperson of the Daisy Eye Cancer Fund, Chairperson of SIDERAC, Trustee of the Sir Michael Blundell Trust, and Chairperson and Trustee of the Rattansi Educational Trust.

In 2013, Dr Rattansi was appointed Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the institution’s history.

During her decade-long tenure, which ended in 2023, she presided over graduation ceremonies, promoted academic excellence and supported initiatives aimed at strengthening the university’s role as Kenya’s premier institution of higher learning.

Her contributions to education and philanthropy earned her several national honours and distinctions. In 2006, she was awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) by the Government of Kenya in recognition of her service to the nation.

She also received an Honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) from Moi University for her outstanding contribution to higher education and community development.

Dr Rattansi leaves behind a lasting legacy of educational empowerment, philanthropy and public service that has impacted thousands of students and communities across Kenya.
