KIAMBU, Kenya — Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of selectively issuing national identification documents, alleging discrimination against regions perceived to oppose President William Ruto.
Speaking in Kiambu during the unveiling of his party’s gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 elections, Gachagua claimed that young people in certain areas are facing delays in acquiring IDs, while others receive the documents within days.
“As we go towards the General Election, William Ruto and his people are sensing defeat and have decided to have selective issuance of IDs,” Gachagua said.
He alleged that in counties such as Nakuru, applicants from communities perceived to support the government receive IDs within two to three days, while others wait between three to four months.
“Areas perceived to be against William Ruto… our young people are being denied IDs,” he claimed.
Gachagua warned that the alleged disparities could undermine constitutional rights, insisting that all eligible citizens must have equal access to identification documents regardless of political affiliation.
“All Kenyan children deserve IDs, whether they support or oppose William Ruto,” he said.
The former Deputy President further threatened mass action if the situation is not addressed, putting the registrar of persons on notice.
“If this discrimination does not stop, we shall request our Gen Zs to occupy registration centres, Huduma centres and your offices in Nairobi,” he said.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election, with opposition figures increasingly raising concerns over governance, public services and electoral processes.
However, the government has not publicly responded to the specific allegations.
Under Article 12 of the Constitution, every Kenyan citizen is entitled to identification and registration, a key requirement for accessing public services and participating in elections.
