NAIROBI, Kenya, July 12 — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of 25-year-old Joy Kanini Gathu, bringing to an end an intelligence-led manhunt that culminated in Timau, Meru County.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the DCI said the suspect, John Nderitu Mureithi, was arrested on the night of July 10, 2026, along the Nanyuki–Isiolo Road while allegedly attempting to flee to Uganda.
Following the arrest, detectives conducted a search and recovered four mobile phones, including a handset believed to belong to the deceased.
The recovered devices have been seized as exhibits as investigations continue.
The suspect was later booked at Kiganjo Police Station.
Investigators Allege Body Was Dismembered
According to the DCI, investigations indicate that the alleged murder occurred on June 9, 2026, following a confrontation between the suspect and Joy Kanini Gathu inside the suspect’s house in Ngangarithi Estate, Nyeri.
Detectives allege that after the fatal incident, the suspect dismembered the victim’s body and disposed of the remains in different locations in an attempt to conceal the crime and hinder investigations.
The allegations have been made by investigators and are yet to be tested in court.
Court Appearance
The suspect is expected to be arraigned on Monday, July 13, 2026, where detectives will seek custodial orders to allow them to complete investigations.
If granted, the orders would allow investigators to continue gathering evidence before making further charging decisions.
In its statement, the DCI extended condolences to the family and friends of Joy Kanini Gathu.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Joy Kanini Gathu and remains steadfast in its commitment to conducting thorough, fair and impartial investigations to ensure justice is served,” the agency said.
The case remains under investigation.
