KISII, Kenya — Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has declared the Linda Mwananchi movement the only political formation capable of uniting Kenya and delivering meaningful reforms ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Kisii on Friday before the movement’s scheduled rallies in Kisii and Nyamira counties, Kang’ata said the opposition-backed outfit seeks to build an inclusive country where institutions serve all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
“The only political faction that is national is Linda Mwananchi. And that’s an ideal that our forefathers have been unable to achieve since independence. We believe in 2027 Linda Mwananchi is going to achieve that dream of a unified Kenya,” he said.
The movement is spearheaded by several opposition leaders, including ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. The Gusii tour forms part of its nationwide grassroots mobilisation campaign ahead of the next General Election.
Reform agenda
Kang’ata said the movement would prioritise reforms in education and healthcare if it forms the next government.
He pledged that the coalition would pursue free education for all learners and establish an efficient public healthcare system capable of delivering quality services across the country.
The governor also criticised the government’s Housing Levy, arguing that Kenyans continue to shoulder mandatory deductions without receiving commensurate benefits.
He did not provide evidence to support the claim.
Democracy and human rights
Kang’ata further condemned recent reports of alleged abductions and extrajudicial killings, saying such incidents threaten Kenya’s democratic gains and constitutional order.
He said the country should uphold the values championed by pro-democracy leaders including George Moseti Anyona, Kenneth Matiba and Charles Rubia.
“Let us unite. Let us be one. We want every Kenyan to feel part of this movement. Ours is not a violent movement. We are just exercising freedoms, and that is one of the areas where the government should improve on. We must support democracy,” he said.
His remarks come amid heightened political activity as opposition leaders intensify grassroots campaigns across the country while positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Linda Mwananchi movement is expected to hold a series of public rallies across Kisii and Nyamira counties as it seeks to consolidate support in the Gusii region.
