HMD Unveils Barbie Flip Phone to Fuel Users’ Digital Detox

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Nostalgia just got a tech twist. HMD Global, in collaboration with Mattel, has launched the retro-inspired Barbie flip phone.

It’s a throwback to simpler times, perfect for anyone craving a break from the relentless demands of smartphones. The HMD Barbie phone brings back the flip feature phone but with a Barbie-themed makeover. Powered by KaiOS 3.1, this phone is all about simplicity.

There are no apps to tempt you, just good old-fashioned calls and texts. It’s designed for those aiming for a digital detox, offering a unique way to slow down and savor moments without constant screen time.

But it’s not just about disconnecting. The Barbie flip phone adds some fun to the mix with custom Barbie icons, ringtones, wallpapers, and even a Barbie-themed Snake game.

Plus, HMD has thrown in some digital wellbeing features like self-care reminders, meditation apps, and wellbeing tips, making it perfect for those seeking balance between tech and life.

Under the hood, the Barbie flip phone is powered by a Unisoc T107 chipset with storage starting from 128MB (expandable up to 32GB via microSD) and RAM options between 64MB to 512MB.

It might sound modest in the age of 5G smartphones, but this phone’s appeal lies in its simplicity. For those who appreciate fewer distractions, it’s more than enough.

On the hardware side, you get a 5MP primary camera and a VGA secondary camera, but no selfie camera – because sometimes, less is more.

The phone comes with a 2.8-inch TFT LCD main display and a smaller 1.77-inch external screen for quick glances. A 1450mAh battery powers the device, with Type-C charging making it easy to juice up. It also boasts Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi support, a headphone jack, and wireless FM radio for those unplugged moments.

One of the standout features of the Barbie flip phone is the box of accessories it comes with, adding a playful vibe to your detox journey.

You’ll find Barbie stick-on gems, color-matched polishing cloths, attachable phone charms, two replaceable back covers, and even a beaded phone strap. Talk about a complete Barbie-themed package!

“In our fast-paced digital world, it can often feel like the online buzz never stops,” said Lars Silberbauer, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Human Mobile Devices, highlighting how the phone encourages users to take a break and enjoy more fun-filled, less-connected moments.

Human Mobile Devices emphasized their commitment to innovation and how the Barbie flip phone is a perfect blend of nostalgia and digital wellbeing.
