NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya National Highways Authority has announced the temporary closure of a section of Uhuru Highway between Museum Hill Interchange and Westlands Roundabout to allow for road maintenance and drainage improvement works.
In a notice issued on Friday, May 8, KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said the affected stretch will be closed overnight between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9.
“KeNHA notifies the public that a section of Uhuru Highway (A8 Road) between Museum Hill Interchange and Westlands Roundabout will be temporarily closed on Thursday, May 7, 2026, and Friday, May 8, 2026, between 10.00 pm and 5.00 am,” the statement said in part.
According to the authority, the works are aimed at repairing the damaged road surface and improving drainage systems to address persistent flooding experienced along the section during heavy rains.
The affected stretch has experienced significant wear since the construction of the Nairobi Expressway, with restoration efforts reportedly delayed for nearly two years after completion of the expressway project.
Parts of the road, particularly near the Riverside Road junction, have also suffered further damage from floodwaters following heavy rainfall in Nairobi.
KeNHA advised motorists to use alternative routes, including Parklands Ring Road, Ojijo Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, and University Way to avoid traffic congestion during the closure.
Motorists were also encouraged to consider using the Nairobi Expressway to minimise delays.
The authority further urged road users to comply with the temporary traffic management plan and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals deployed at the site.
“Normal traffic operations on the road will be restored upon completion of the works,” the statement added.
The closure comes amid heightened concerns about road infrastructure damage in Nairobi caused by heavy rains and flooding, which have disrupted traffic in several parts of the city in recent weeks.
