NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the violent disruption of a public forum at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, as investigators intensify efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the incident.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NPS said the arrests followed investigations into events that unfolded on June 12, when a group of individuals stormed the cathedral compound and attempted to disrupt a meeting being held within the church premises.
“The National Police Service wishes to provide the public with an update on the ongoing investigation following an incident on 12th June 2026 at All Saints’ Cathedral, where a group of individuals stormed the premises and attempted to disrupt a meeting in one of the buildings within the church compound,” the statement said.
According to police, officers responded promptly after receiving reports of the disturbance and managed to restore order.
“Upon receiving reports of the disturbance, police officers responded promptly to the scene. They successfully repulsed the group, restored order, and secured the area. Two suspects were apprehended and are currently in police custody,” the statement added.
The update comes amid growing public concern over the attack, which targeted a post-budget review forum attended by religious leaders, civil society representatives, lawyers, and members of the public. The meeting had been convened to discuss the implications of the 2026/27 national budget presented by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi a day earlier.
Earlier accounts, supported by CCTV footage circulating online, showed groups of men entering the cathedral compound before chaos erupted inside the venue. Witnesses reported incidents of intimidation, robbery, and violence as participants scrambled for safety.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation from religious leaders, human rights groups, and legal organizations, who described it as an attack on constitutional freedoms, including freedom of assembly, expression, and public participation.
The Inter-Religious Council of Kenya, the Law Society of Kenya, and the Defenders Coalition have all called for thorough investigations and accountability for those responsible.
NPS said detectives are conducting a detailed review of CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the identities of all individuals involved.
“Investigations are ongoing, including a thorough review of CCTV footage, with the aim of identifying and apprehending all other individuals involved,” the Service said.
Police have appealed to members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or use emergency lines 999 and 911, as well as the #FichuaKwaDCI reporting channels.
The Service pledged that investigations would be conducted “thoroughly, professionally, transparently, and impartially” to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.
