Divock Origi Announces Retirement From Professional Football

Date:

Kenyan-born Belgian striker Divock Origi has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career defined by decisive goals and memorable moments, most notably with Liverpool FC.

Origi, who most recently was on the books of AC Milan, confirmed his retirement in a statement reflecting on fulfilling his childhood dreams and completing his journey in the game.

He began his professional career at Lille OSC in France, where he emerged as a promising young forward before earning a move to Liverpool FC in 2014.

At Liverpool, Origi became renowned as a clutch “super sub” under Jürgen Klopp, repeatedly delivering in crucial moments despite limited playing time and helping the club to major honours.

Among his most iconic contributions was the 2019 UEFA Champions League campaign, when he scored a crucial brace in the semi-final comeback against FC Barcelona before netting Liverpool’s second goal in the 2–0 final win over Tottenham Hotspur.

He also became a cult hero in Merseyside derbies, scoring decisive goals against Everton, including a dramatic late winner in December 2018 that further cemented his status among Liverpool supporters.

During his time contracted to Liverpool, he spent the 2017–18 season on loan at VfL Wolfsburg in Germany before returning to Anfield.

After leaving Liverpool in 2022, Origi joined AC Milan in Italy but struggled to regain consistent form, later spending a loan spell at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Across his career, Origi also represented Belgium on the international stage, adding to his reputation as a forward capable of delivering in high-pressure moments across Europe.

In his parting shot, Origi wrote:

“My purpose in the game as a player is fulfilled. I lived out my childhood dreams to play on the biggest stages and win the biggest trophies. I am grateful to God for all of it.

To my fans across the world who helped me shine: every iconic moment, every goal, every piece of history we made together will forever be ours.

To every club, and all the coaches and teammates who stood beside me, thank you. You shaped me in ways that go far beyond the pitch. Representing Belgium, my nation, while carrying Kenya, my roots, was a joy.

And to my family and those closest to me… without you, I am not who I am today. I am forever grateful. The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling. More of the journey to come… With love, Divock Origi.”
