NAIROBI, Kenya —In a move that underscores the high political cost of defying party lines, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has expelled nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from its ranks, citing a breach of the party’s Code of Conduct.
The decision, sealed by the party’s top organs, signals UDA’s zero-tolerance approach to what it views as political double-dealing.
The Expulsion: UDA Pulls the Plug
On May 19, 2025, UDA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) ratified a Disciplinary Committee ruling that found Senator Orwoba in violation of internal party rules.
The disciplinary complaint, filed by Festus Omwamba and Henry Muriithi under Disciplinary Complaint No. 2 of 2025, appears to have been the tipping point.
“Pursuant to Article 29 of the UDA Party Constitution… Senator Gloria Orwoba be expelled from the membership… with immediate effect,” read a statement from UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar.
He added that the party has formally notified the Speaker of the Senate, requesting the initiation of her removal process.
According to the party, Orwoba has also been stripped of all privileges and can no longer represent or act on behalf of UDA in any capacity.
Consolata Wakwabubi Steps In
UDA has already moved to fill the political vacuum left in Orwoba’s wake. Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi, a nominee from Kimilili Constituency in Bungoma County, is set to take up the Senate position.
The nomination was swiftly made public as the party looks to maintain its legislative footprint.
Freedom of Expression vs. Party Loyalty
While emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression and association — both protected under the 2010 Constitution of Kenya — UDA drew a firm line when it comes to loyalty.
Omar’s statement pointedly noted that “Senator Gloria Orwoba cannot continue to play for two political teams simultaneously.”
It’s not just about speaking out; it’s about picking a side and sticking to it, at least according to the party’s leadership.
The Registrar of Political Parties and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) have been notified of the expulsion, effectively starting the formal process of replacing Orwoba in Parliament.
